The Office of Multicultural Affairs in partnership with SNMA will host our fourth annual, A Day in the Life at Rush University on March 24, 2008. This amazing community outreach program brings in high school students from the local community to experience a day in the life of a hospital. Following mock cases through the different aspects of patient care (e.g. Emergency Room interactions and surgeries in the Operating Rooms) gives these students a unique opportunity to experience life in the health care field. Email us for more information! Photos: 2008 | 2007 Read More »
A cornerstone event for SNMA each year is our Pipeline mentorship program for local community high school students, where we offer several hands on learning opportunities to generate interest in the medical field and in college as a whole. Activities are geared toward learning about medicine, such as taking the students to the anatomy lab cadavers so that they can appreciate the heart, lung, intestine functions. This year’s events are November 3rd (Anatomy Lab), December 1st (Test Taking Workshop & Mock Patient Cases: Asthma, Strep Throat, & Ulcers), January 12th (Interactive Medicine: Hands on Workshops in CPR, Intubation, EKGs, Vitals, Blood Pressure, Hand Washing/Bacteria, & an Emergency Room Scenario) & February 16th (Exploring Different Careers in Health Care). We combine exciting hands on activities with learning about and generating interest in important health care issues. Email us for more information. In celebration of Black History Month, SNMA is hosting a movie viewing of “Something the Lord Made,” the story of two men - an ambitious white surgeon and a gifted black carpenter turned lab technician - who defied the racial strictures of the Jim Crow South and together pioneered the field of heart surgery. Please join us February 27th & 28th from 12pm-1pm in Rm 960. Bring your lunch and enjoy the movie; snacks and refreshments will be provided.
In our ongoing partnership with the Rush’s RCSIP Henry Horner program, SNMA members have committed to volunteer their time throughout the year to help tutor and provide mentorship for elementary school students. Weekly tutoring is provided for children who attend the Major Adams Academy and live in the Henry Horner Homes. Contact either the Henry Horner Steering Committee or SNMA Executive Board for more information on this partnership.
The executive boards of SNMA and NNLAMS, upperclassmen, and some general assembly members have been working diligently to address the lack of Multicultural Affairs here at Rush. With overwhelming support from the Rush Community, we collected over 700+ signatures representing 30+ different departments in support of the creation of a Multicultural Affairs Office. We are currently part of a committee along with over 25 faculty members and numerous staff from varying departments throughout the hospital that are working on this student-lead initiative to establish an Office of Multicultural Affairs. This office will serve to unite all of the colleges and departments at Rush University with excellent leadership and resources for all current and future students. UPDATE: “Sharon Gates, MA [has been appointed to] the newly created position of Interim Director of Multicultural Student Affairs for Rush University.” Congratulations Ms. Gates!!!!! We are dedicated in continuing to develop the larger, overall plan for Multicultural Affairs here at Rush University. Read More »
Due to the generosity of the M1s, M2s, Kaplan, and the Rush Hospital at large, SNMA was able to raise over $300+ in our Annual Winter Adopt-A-Family drive!! On behalf of all of us at SNMA, thank you so much for your tremendous support in making this a brighter holiday for one family. Photos
In a successful partnership with AMA, we conducted a University-Wide Clothing Drive and gathered over 300 winter clothing items which were donated to the Franciscan House of Mary & Joseph, an emergency overnight shelter accommodating 215 men and 35 women every night of the year. Thank you to all who donated; we really appreciate your support. Photos
On Saturday, October 27, 2007, in partnership with AMSA, SNMA is participating in a special symposium for Chicago Area Medical & Pharmacy Students. Please join us for an exciting half-day symposium on the influence of the pharmaceutical industry on evidence based prescribing. This symposium represents a unique opportunity for medical and pharmacy students to learn about important issues that will affect their prescribing practices, as well as their relationship with the pharmaceutical industry. In an effort to balance the industry information sources students are exposed to throughout their training and practice, the symposium will provide skills to become more critical and evidence-based prescribers. Evidence Based Prescribing and the Pharmaceutical Industry is a joint effort, organized by FLIP, medical and pharmacy students and faculty and others including the Editor in Chief of the JAMA, Catherine DeAngelis, MD, MPH. The 43rd SNMA Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC), March 19-23, 2008, promises to be an exhilarating event in the Big Apple - New York City. Students and professionals will gather to attend a wide range of educational and networking events. It is consistently the largest gathering of underrepresented minority medical students at any time of the year in any place in the nation. The theme of the 2008 AMEC is Leadership in Medicine: Science to Service. The leadership theme works in conjunction with the SNMA 2007-2008 Executive Agenda, to focus on developing SNMA members into the future leaders of medicine. Through this theme, will continue to support our mission to support current and future underrepresented minority medical students, address the needs of underserved communities and increase the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.
